How B-RELYT Students Are Turning Real Data Into Real Math Skills

This summer, B-RELYT students across two programs — the Summer Intensive and the Summer Bridge Program — are proving that math comes alive when it is connected to the real world.
Growing Reach, Growing Impact
Now in its third year of funding from the Amity Foundation, CFCI, and JCOD, BMC Pathways served over 25 students, whose math skills grew by an average of 74%. [Register for BMC Pathways Year 3]
B-RELYT's Summer Intensive 2026 hybrid program served 26 students this year — including one student joining all the way from New York, a sign that B-RELYT's approach to math education is resonating well beyond Los Angeles. Wednesday's sessions were held in person at St. Bernard High School, where students worked hands-on with drones and continued digging into the Heat Islands project together.
BMC led St. Bernard's Summer Bridge Program for the third consecutive year. It is a two-week in-person program that builds incoming freshmen's Algebra 1 skills. This year, 41 students applied math using a UCLA Heat Islands curriculum, giving even more students the chance to build confidence and skills before the new school year begins.
Learning Statistics Through Heat Islands
Both summer programs are using a shared, hands-on project this summer: studying Heat Islands using real temperature data from across Los Angeles County. Students applied concepts like mean, median, mode, and range to data that describes their own communities — turning a core math concept into a tool for understanding the world around them.
Field Trip to AltaSea
As a highlight of the summer, BMC's Summer
Intensive 2026 and St. Bernard's students headed to AltaSea in San Pedro for a hands-on field trip. Transportation for this field trip was made possible through the generous support of the Office of Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell.
At AltaSea, our students got their hands on the controllers for the first time and sent robotics down into the ocean — a moment that turned a field trip into a memory. The students dissected squid. In addition, students had a phenomenal presentation with Brad Bartz, Founder and President of ABC Solar Inc., who through his daughter, enforced the importance of math, taught the students about Ohm's Law and what energy really is.
Looking Ahead
From new students joining from across the country to real-world data projects that connect math to everyday life, this summer is a strong example of B-RELYT's mission in action: building confidence, skill, and opportunity for students through math.
